In light of the Supreme Court hearing oral arguments on Prop 8 and DOMA this week, the FAMiLY Leader, the top social conservative policy organization in Iowa asked people on Facebook today to offer a prayer in their comments.

I obliged.

I pray the justices strike down these laws that violate our Constitution and treat my friends and family like second class citizens.

I pray that people of faith recognize the difference between their church, whose rights to perform or not perform ceremonies I will vehemently defend, and our civil society who needs to treat these committed, loving couples the same.

I pray the proponents of marriage equality understand that not all opposition comes from a place of malice and are patient and kind.

I pray the opponents of marriage equality don’t descend into hyperbole and equate sexual orientation with a devient behavior.

I pray you won’t delete this just because I don’t agree with your organization’s stance.

To their credit, they haven’t removed the post.
