Iowa House Republicans introduced HJR4 this morning. It died in the Senate last session.

This is a proposed amendment to the Iowa Constitution that duplicates and expands the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution. It is completely unnecessary and the expansions are downright dangerous.

The right of an individual to acquire, keep, possess, transport, carry, transfer, and use arms to defend life and liberty and for all other legitimate purposes is fundamental and shall not be infringed upon or denied.

Mandatory licensing, registration, or special taxation as a condition of the exercise of this right is prohibited, and any other restriction shall be subject to strict scrutiny.

I’m going to go ahead and assume that one of the restrictions on acquiring and posessing to pass their (read: The Iowa Gun Owners) strict scrutiny is violent criminals?? Maybe? Ugh.

This is so dangerous. This removes ANY accountability from owners or vendors for these weapons. Your gun was stolen and used in a crime? Who knows? Is it mine? There’s no registration! Iowa would be straw purchase central.

Here’s the email I sent to my State Representative. Please take a few minutes and do the same.

Representative Highfill,

I respectfully ask that you remove your name from the list of sponsors and your support of HJR4 which was introduced this morning.

By making licensing and registration of deadly firearms illegal it will be harder for law enforcement to do their job when a criminal uses a firearm in a crime. It is not an infringement of anyone’s rights to have them register their firearms. Responsible gun owners should be happy to do so. Filling out some paperwork is not tyranny.

Please ignore the cries and chest thumping of the Iowa Gun Owners. They spread fear and mistrust of our neighbors in order to pad their membership roles and curry favor with those in power.

Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to your response.
